About Betsy

Dr. Betsy Bates Freed is a licensed clinical psychologist with a special interest in the intersection between physical illness and emotional well-being. Born and raised in Colorado, she received her BA in writing from Denison University, Granville, Ohio. She has worked as a daily newspaper reporter and editor, a contributor to numerous books on health and wellness, and a medical correspondent and bureau chief for International Medical News Group, a series of independent clinical newspapers for physicians.
She received her masters’ and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from Antioch University Santa Barbara, following clinical training at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, Cleveland Elementary School in Santa Barbara, and California State University Channel Islands. Her predoctoral internship was completed at the Family Practice Residency Program of Glendale Adventist Medical Center, and her postdoctoral year was spent at the Children’s System of Care within Santa Barbara County ADMHS.

Her research interests include the impact of work-related losses on distress among cancer patients and gender differences in psychosocial support. For several years, she authored “Vitality Signs,” a psychosocial blog for The Oncology Report.

She is a member of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society, the American Psychological Association, the California Psychological Association, and the Santa Barbara County Psychological Association, where she has served as board member.

Dr. Bates Freed and her husband, writer David Freed, live in Santa Barbara, Calif., with a rambunctious Australian Shepherd. They have two grown children and four grandchildren.

Working alongside two internal medicine physicians, I provide comprehensive psychotherapy to patients who range in age from 10 to 99. The focus of my practice is health/medical psychology, providing assistance to medical patients and their family members as they cope and adjust to cancer, heart disease, eating disorders, serious injury, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and major life events. Monthly, I conduct group therapy for advanced cancer patients. I serve as an adjunct professor of psychology at Antioch University Santa Barbara and regularly supervise graduate students in psychology on their dissertation committees and/or during their clinical training.
