Welcome.

I'm Dr. Betsy Bates Freed

Dedicated to your well-being in illness and recovery.

In my limited clinical practice, I treat clients facing many challenges, but those who might benefit most from my expertise are people facing medical illnesses or caregiving stressors. In addition, I teach psychology at the graduate level, write, and lecture on psychological topics.

Dr. Betsy Bates Freed, PsyD.

Each person’s history holds the hidden strengths that will help to heal the body and soothe the mind and soul.

I welcome all clients but those who might benefit most from my expertise are those who are facing medical illnesses, such as cancer or heart disease, or who would like to change their health behaviors. I also specialize in supporting the family
members caring for people with dementia. My interest in health psychology began during my 30-year career as a medical journalist (Internal Medicine News, Pediatric News). I completed my training at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, the Family Medicine Residency Program at Glendale Adventist Medical Center, and the Children’s Clinic of SB County. Ideally, I will work collaboratively with your physician to help with your integrated medical care.

Health psychologists see patients of all ages. My psychological orientation is eclectic and will depend on your goals. We may process your distress and work to draw on your strengths to assist with your adjustment to a difficult diagnosis. At times, I may assist you with management of physical symptoms.

My health psychology practice focuses on the whole person, incorporating important physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and family contributions to healing and adjustment. I have been fortunate to spend many years working closely with physicians and medical researchers, enabling me to blend clinical knowledge with compassion in my work with patients.

I understand that families, as well as patients, are impacted by illness. I work with couples, partners, siblings, and children to help strengthen the family unit and structure the support “team” so that each individual can contribute in his or her own way.

Finally, I strive to maintain currency in my field, both as an adjunct professor of psychology at Antioch University and an active member of the Santa Barbara County Psychological Association, California Psychological Association, American Psychological Association and the American Psychosocial Oncology Society
